Once you are comfortable in how you can get back to a decent starting place, then browse to an image folder in the right panel. Leave it set to the defaults or explore your choice. Under Operations | Open | View | Show Settings, you can have a say in how images are displayed. It also allows you to choose Two panels or not, and optionally, a Tree view to the left. Since the settings retain the last panel (of 5), it may start in any of the five. There is a Back and Next at the bottom left. When clicked, it displays the initial settings dialog.
